Each year during the California State Bar Annual Meeting, California Women Lawyers hosts its Annual Dinner to celebrate the organization's achievements. Gordon & Rees proudly served as a Pioneer level sponsor of the September 15 event in Long Beach, attended by Orange County Partner Patricia Lee-Gulley and San Francisco Partner Carol Copsey. Patricia is the President-elect of Orange County Women Lawyers and Carol is a Past President of California Women Lawyers and continues to serve on the Board of the CWL Foundation.
The keynote speaker, Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court Tani Cantil-Sakauye, discussed the challenges Assembly Bill 1208 presents for judicial independence if authority over court administration is removed from the Judicial Council. The event also featured an auction benefiting the CWL Foundation.
CWL awarded its prestigious Fay Stender Award to former Assemblywoman and Santa Barbara attorney Hannah-Beth Jackson, who has dedicated her life to fighting for women's rights. The annual award is given to an attorney who is committed to the representation of women, disadvantaged groups and unpopular causes, and whose courage, zest for life and demonstrated ability to effect change as a single individual make her a role model for women attorneys. CWL also established a new Lawyer as Citizen Award in memory of Judy Soley of Fresno, an outstanding community citizen.
