Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani Cannabis, Hemp & CBD practice group leader Christopher Strunk and Birmingham Senior Counsel Stacy Moon will present “But They Said Hemp Was Legal! What Every Hemp Grower Needs to Know About Evolving Laws & Regulations Impacting the Industry.”
This presentation is part of AmericanHort’s Cultivate 21 Conference, and will take place on Friday, July 9, 2021. This two-day hemp conference features educational programming, products, and services for those involved in hemp horticulture.
The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp (varietal of the Cannabis sativa L. plant) from the Controlled Substances Act, ushering in the most exciting new agricultural opportunity in 100 years. But the US Department of Agriculture, the US Food & Drug Administration and individual states have promulgated a patchwork of confusing and sometimes contradictory regulations and laws to regulate hemp – all of which continue to evolve. The fledgling industry must also learn to comply with existing law and regulations – including environmental laws – predating its existence. This session is aimed at educating the pragmatic hemp grower about these laws, the importance of compliance, and what they can do to ensure they are on the right side of the regulators.
Strunk has represented clients in the industrial hemp and cannabis sector since 2014, assisting companies in complying with state environmental laws, managing downstream risk, and defending them in high-stakes product liability litigation. He is nationally recognized for his work on the environmental issues facing the cannabis industry, including litigation risks, state regulations, and agency enforcement. He is a leader of the Gordon & Rees Cannabis, Hemp & CBD practice group one of the largest and deepest practices in the country. He is also a member of the firm’s Environmental/Toxic Tort, Commercial Litigation, and Entertainment practice groups and has more than twenty years of experience litigating complex environmental and toxic tort disputes.
Moon is a member of the Commercial Litigation practice group, as well as Employment Law, Construction Law, Government Regulatory & Administrative Law, Professional Liability and Cannabis, Hemp & CBD practice groups. She is an AV-rated attorney, with more than 20 years of primarily defense litigation, including commercial, construction, employment litigation, and professional liability defense.
