The American Lawyer Highlights GRSM’s Strong Retention in Lateral Market

Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani was featured in The American Lawyer’s recent article, “Third or Fourth Stop? ‘Serial Laterals’ No Longer a Dealbreaker,” which examines the rising trend of lateral partner movement across the legal industry.

Despite considerable movement in the lateral marketplace, GRSM has maintained an impressive 88.5% retention rate for lateral partners brought on during the past two years, outpacing many peer firms. During that time frame, the firm welcomed 122 lateral partners while seeing only 14 departures, demonstrating GRSM’s strong ability to attract and retain top-tier talent even in an increasingly fluid legal market.

As noted by Firmwide Managing Partner Dion Cominos, “You don’t get to scale by being afraid of your shadow. You have to be very bold, decisive, and take risks. That’s a strategy of any successful company—to embrace the entropy and uncertainty that growth presents.” Thus, while some firms have struggled with rapid lateral turnover, GRSM has cultivated an environment where laterals can integrate successfully, build their practices, and establish long-term careers. The firm’s 50-state platform, national reach, and collaborative culture continue to be key drivers of high retention and strong lateral integration. As the legal industry evolves, GRSM remains committed to thoughtful, strategic growth, ensuring that lateral hires not only join the firm—but remain and thrive.
