Aubrey E. Blatchley

Of Counsel

Aubrey Blatchley is Of Counsel in the Firm’s Hartford office.  Aubrey defends businesses in litigation involving complex contractual disputes and matters asserting claims for bad faith, unfair trade practices, fraud and misrepresentation.  She has extensive experience representing insurance companies involved in coverage disputes and bad faith litigation across the country and through appeal.  In addition, Aubrey represents clients in the insurance and financial services industry involved in government investigations, market conduct examinations, and in responding to attorney general subpoenas and complaints before regulatory authorities.

While Aubrey primarily practices in the areas of insurance coverage and commercial litigation, she also has extensive experience defending companies involved in mass-tort litigation.  In addition, Aubrey defends insureds in the employment context against charges of discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.  Aubrey also has experience litigating complex matters involving housing authorities, the state, municipalities, and quasi-public agencies, including at the appellate level.

Aubrey has been named a Connecticut Rising Star® in the areas of Business Litigation, Insurance Coverage and Civil Litigation: Defense by Super Lawyers Magazine from 2010 through 2019.

Aubrey co-authored the Connecticut chapter of the Product Liability Desk Reference, A Fifty State Compendium (Aspen Publishing) (2012 Ed – 2016 Ed) and the Connecticut chapter of the Business Torts Desk Reference, A Fifty State Compendium (Aspen Publishing (2013 Ed – 2016 Ed).

Representative cases include:

  • CRRA v. Wheelabrator (2007) (represented a quasi-governmental agency in an arbitration commenced in the midst of contract renewal negotiations concerning a long term solid waste disposal agreement at a waste-to-energy plant to enforce the terms of the original contract's renewal provision);
  • Carford v. Empire Fire and Marine Ins. Co., 94 Conn.App. 41, 891 A.2d 55 (2006) (holding that absent a contractual relationship between the parties or a judgment leading to subrogation, an insurance carrier owes no duty of good faith and fair dealing to a third-party claimant and a third-party claimant has no cause of action under the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act prior to a judicial determination of liability);
  • American States Ins. Co. v. Allstate Ins. Co., 94 Conn.App. 79, 891 A.2d (2006) (affirming in part trial court's decision granting plaintiff's motion for summary judgment and holding that an insurer does not act as a volunteer when undertaking the defense of its insured and therefore has standing to pursue a subrogation action).

Community Involvement

  • For many years, Aubrey volunteered on the Board of Directors for the Connecticut Defense Lawyers Association, where she also served for a period as Co-Chair of the Young Lawyers Committee, as well as on the Board of Directors for the YWCA of New Britain, where she was involved in the bi-annual Women in Leadership Awards event and in fundraising endeavors to support various YWCA initiatives.
  • Aubrey has been appointed by a local Board of Education to serve as an Impartial Hearing Officer for accommodation hearings.
