Hazel Mae Pangan is a Partner with the Intellectual Property, Commercial Litigation, and Cyber, Privacy & Data Security, practice groups.  She is the Deputy National Chair of the firm's Intellectual Property Practice Group. 

Hazel's practice focuses on intellectual property and complex commercial litigation in both state and federal courts.  She has successfully handled copyright, trademark, patent, antitrust, technology, and other commercial matters, including technology disputes, involving various business sectors. She represents clients in the consumer products, internet services, software, nutraceutical, apparel, and jewelry industries. Hazel also maintains a fashion law practice, representing leading retail brands and luxury jewelry and watch companies in litigation and transactional matters. She also advises clients on antitrust policies, including advertising and resale pricing. In addition, Hazel represents clients in data privacy and security matters, including class actions.  

Before attending law school, Hazel worked as a corporate systems instructor and administrator for an international defense contractor. In that capacity, Hazel developed training curriculum and authored corporate policies and procedures in compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and federal regulations. Hazel also worked directly on the design and implementation of enterprise application software.

During law school, Hazel clerked at the United States Attorney's Office for the Central District of California and the Attorney General's Office of the California Department of Justice. Hazel has successfully argued in the California Courts of Appeal, obtaining affirmance for each representative matter.

  • Representation of a start-up food technology company and its directors and officers in shareholder derivative litigation.  
  • Representation of an international fitness company in trademark infringement, anti-cybersquatting, and other Lanham Act claims. 
  • Representation of a leading cellular phone accessories company in trademark and copyright litigation. 
  • Representation of multiple software, and internet services and marketing companies in breach of contract and trademark matters involving various products and services.
  • Prevailed on summary judgment on fair use in trademark litigation on behalf of luxury watch brand BREITLING.  Solid 21, Inc. v. Breitling U.S.A., Inc., No. 3:19-CV-00514 (MPS), 2021 WL 5868173, at *1 (D. Conn. Dec. 10, 2021). Served as lead author on appellate brief and argued in appeal affirming summary judgment.  Solid 21, Inc. v. Breitling U.S.A., Inc., 96 F.4th 265, 270 (2d Cir. 2024).
  • Prevailed on a motion to dismiss trademark claims based on fair use on behalf of communications technology company and national retailers in trademark action.  McZeal v. Amazon Servs., LLC, No. 221CV07093SVWRAO, 2021 WL 5213099, at *3 (C.D. Cal. Nov. 8, 2021).  Served as lead author on appellate brief in appeal affirming dismissal.  McZeal v. Amazon.com Servs., LLC, No. 21-56328, 2023 WL 3563009 (9th Cir. May 19, 2023).
  • Representation of liqueur brand JÄGERMEISTER in trademark litigation. Served as lead author on summary judgment motion granted on non-infringement grounds.  Alfwear, Inc. v. Mast-Jagermeister US, Inc., No. 2:12-CV-00936-TC-DBP, 2021 WL 364109, at *10 (D. Utah Feb. 3, 2021).  Served as lead author on appellate brief in appeal affirming summary judgment.  Alfwear, Inc. v. Mast-Jaegermeister US, Inc., No. 21-4029, 2023 WL 5765891, at *1 (10th Cir. Sept. 7, 2023).
  • Defeated motion for preliminary injunction on claims alleging trade secret misappropriation. TGG Management Company Inc. v. Petraglia et. al. 19-cv-02007 (S.D. Cal. 2019).
  • Representation of fashion accessories manufacturer in trademark litigation.  Served as lead author on summary judgment motion granted on non-infringement grounds.  Bison Designs, LLC v. Lejon of California, Inc., No. 14-CV-02885-MSK-NYW, 2016 WL 943779, at *9 (D. Colo. Mar. 14, 2016).
  • Representation of medical hospital in architectural copyright litigation.  Served as lead author on summary judgment motion granted on copyright invalidity and damages limitation grounds.  Thomson v. HMC Grp., et al., No. CV133273DMGVBKX, 2015 WL 11256775, at *14 (C.D. Cal. Oct. 29, 2015).  
  • Representation of a luxury jewelry designer and retailer in trademark, trade secrets, and licensing litigation. Obtained reversal of preliminary injunction motion.  Philippe Charriol Int’l Ltd. v. A’lor Int’l Ltd., 611 F. Appx. 890, 893 (9th Cir. 2015).
