Gordon & Rees has joined the prestigious ranks of the top 100 largest law firms in the country, placing 95th on The National Law Journal's 2013 survey. The firm’s attorney headcount increased 13.4 percent in 2012, lifting it 16 spots (from No. 111 on last year’s survey), and placing it among a small number of firms that accomplished double-digit growth during the time frame in question.
As one of the fastest-growing U.S. law firms, Gordon & Rees has experienced a meteoric rise on the annual NLJ survey since the firm first debuted on the list in 2003 at No. 186. Over the past decade, lawyer count has grown by more than 200 percent as the firm’s national, regional, and local practices have flourished — all without merging with any other firms, or incurring any long-term debt.
Gordon & Rees Firmwide Managing Partner Dion Cominos reflected on the firm’s achievement by observing that, “while becoming one of the nation’s hundred largest law firms was never itself an objective, it is nonetheless a byproduct of having successfully executed on our strategic growth plan and represents the culmination of much hard work by many talented attorneys, staff, and administrators.”
Gordon & Rees accomplished its long-term goal of becoming a pre-eminent, national firm by attracting exceptional, diverse lateral talent and by opening offices in numerous strategic locations essential to its clients. The organization now stands as a full-service litigation and business transactions firm with uncompromising dedication to responsive client service and high-quality/value legal work.
Since 2003, Gordon & Rees has opened 24 new offices — seven of those in 2012 alone: Baltimore; Carlsbad, Calif.; Rapid City, S.D.; Pittsburgh; St. Louis, Mo.; Tysons Corner, Va.; and Washington, D.C. Earlier this year, the firm launched a Philadelphia office and it plans to open more in the coming months.
Founded in San Francisco in 1974, Gordon & Rees is home to more than 525 lawyers with 28 offices in 18 states. Gordon & Rees also is an Am Law 200 firm that has been ranked as a “BTI Client Service All-Star” for the past two years and as a “Litigation King” by Corporate Counsel magazine on its 2012 list of who represents Fortune 100 companies. Gordon & Rees is ranked 139th on the Am Law 200 and 21st on the Diversity Scorecard, both published in 2013 by The American Lawyer.
This year’s NLJ 350 list identifies the nation's largest legal players in 2012 ranked by the firms’ total number of full-time attorneys. Now in its 36th edition, the NLJ counted 141,056 lawyers working in more than 3,500 offices. The newspaper published its first national headcount survey in 1978 with 200 firms, grew it to 250 firms in 1983, and expanded it to 350 firms last year.
