For the third year in a row, Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani was a proud sponsor of the Equality California (EQCA) Equality Awards event in Los Angeles. EQCA is the nation’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization.
At this year’s event held on September 29, 2018, Gordon & Rees attorneys were among about 1200 event attendees, including a wide array of leaders in the legal, business, and labor communities. This was the largest – and most successful – Equality Awards in EQCA’s almost 20-year history. Celebrity and activist, Kathy Griffin, was awarded EQCA’s Ally Leadership Award for her vocal advocacy of LGBT rights in California. Long-time community activist, Jewel Thais-Williams, was awarded EQCA’s Community Leadership Award for her more than 40 years of service to the Los Angeles LGBT community, as well as to other communities which, at times, have been the victims of discrimination and marginalization. Lastly, the Netflix Original Series, “Queer Eye” received EQCA’s Equality Visibility Award.
During the evening, EQCA highlighted its legislative and advocacy work to prevent violence against members of the LGBT community, to ensure equal access to quality health care, and to prevent bullying in schools. Under the visionary leadership of its Executive Director, Rick Zbur, EQCA has become a force for positive change for the LGBT community in California and elsewhere. Gordon & Rees partner, Christopher Wagner, was a member of the Host Committee for this year’s event and is a member of EQCA’s Board of Advisors.
Gordon & Rees is excited to continue its relationship with EQCA and fully supports EQCA’s efforts to seek full and lasting equality, acceptance, and social justice for all people.
