This session will explore defamation cases that have made headlines recently and discuss the ongoing battle between freedom of speech versus freedom from reputational attack. The presenters will discuss these issues in the context of real-world cases and legislative efforts to curb abusive defamation lawsuits yet protect online reputations. They will discuss from the plaintiff and defendant perspectives. Examples will include the Stormy Daniels’ case against President Donald Trump, Johnny Depp’s case against ex-wife Amber Heard, Vernon Unsworth's case against Elon Musk, the Dominion/Smartmatic election cases, and a host of crime “docudrama” cases as well.
Meadows is an experienced trial attorney, focusing on business disputes, internet defamation, and cyber-attack/privacy matters. He has tried cases before judges and juries, arbitrated commercial disputes, and argued trial and appellate matters in federal and state courts.
