Gordon Rees Scully Mansukhani Houston Associate Hee Jin Chang was featured in an article entitled "Life in the Fast Lane," published in Super Lawyers 2023 Texas Rising Stars magazine.
The article describes Ms. Chang's experience qualifying for the 2000 Sydney Olympics at 13 years old in South Korea. After moving from Seoul to Maryland at nine, she began swimming as "a way to connect without having to know the language." Her family moved again from Maryland to Boston and then back to South Korea, where she found herself unknowingly competing to qualify for the Olympics.
Because she was not ready to leave her "regular school" for a specialized educational path, she was kicked off of the South Korean Olympic swim team, sparking a national debate that resulted in the reversal of those education laws and her reinstatement on the team. Ms. Chang qualified again for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. "I didn't medal, but I did really well on my personal levels and goals. I was very proud," she said of her second time at the Olympics.
